On birthdays and being immortal
Jeff looked surprised as Amun appeared with a cake and a couple of bottles of beer. "What's the occasion, then?"
Amun smiled. "According to one of those Earth calendars, it's supposed to be your birthday today. How old does that make you then?"
Jeff thought a moment, but couldn't come up with an answer. He'd stopped keeping count once he'd become immortal. What was the point? Time had a different meaning when you would never die.
"Er, I dunno. I lost count years ago. Time's all messed up anyway. It's nice you remembered though," Jeff said.
"Of course I remembered. I like you. I've had a lot more practice at keeping time out here than you have though. Shall we go down to the Earth for a change? I know you like it down there," Amun said.
Jeff didn't need time to consider the offer. "Yeah, I'd like that. I don't know if anyone down there will still remember me, but I still like going."
The Earth was bathed in darkness. It didn't need to be, they could theoretically pick any time at all to go down, but Jeff didn't want to, so he settled for the night of his 25th birthday. It was one of the happiest nights of his life, even if it still held some sad memories for him.
No one could see them as they walked amongst the guests, but Jeff didn't mind. He wanted to remember how happy it had been, just for once. Amun had told him before that Jeff had forgotten how to be happy, and Jeff reluctantly agreed.
That moment where he was dancing happily with Roy around the room was what he'd come to see. It might've been the last birthday they'd celebrated together, but Jeff held his grief at bay. He just wanted to remember how happy that night had been.
They danced together afterwards too, after everyone had gone. They danced together in the darkness, Roy sung Happy Birthday to him, and they shared a kiss. Promises were made, but all would be broken eventually.
Amun wrapped an arm around his waist as they watched them. Jeff managed a smile.
"It never got any better than that. We were just so happy together. I wish it had lasted," Jeff murmured.
"Oh, but it does. Not in this universe, but in another one. Do you want to see that?" Amun said.
Jeff couldn't resist.
Another birthday, but they were much older now. They still danced together, and seeing how happy they both were, still, after so long together, was more profound than Jeff had realised. All his friends were there, even ones he thought he'd lost all those years ago. A tear rolled down his cheek. For once in his life, he hadn't managed to fuck everything up.
Jeff watched, surprised, as they openly shared a kiss in front of all their friends. Jeff couldn't help feeling embarrassed about it, even if he was just watching. No way would he ever have had the guts to kiss Roy out in public, even in front of their friends. He averted his eyes, just a little, waiting for someone to object.
"Times change, Jeff. This is a different world from the one you know. You actually got married a few decades ago. There are an infinite number of universes. Nothing is ever fixed forever. You're two hundred and thirty five today, if you're interested. Happy birthday," Amun said.
Jeff wasn't sure how to react to any of that. Him, able to marry another bloke? No way, that just made no sense. Having a discrete number for his age scared him. He really hadn't wanted to know. The life he was seeing before him felt ancient. He felt very old then. Birthdays were terrible for that.
They didn't hang around much longer. Jeff didn't want to know any more, and they returned to the cosmos. For once, Jeff smiled, and when Amun revealed a large spaceship cake with 235 candles on it, Jeff laughed and did his best to blow them all out in one go.
